THE DARK KNIGHT RISES” VS. “THE AVENGER

The recent comments by Wally Pfister—Christopher Nolan’s director of photography from “Memento” through the Batman trilogy— shouldn’t be ascribed to sheer jealousy over the fact that “The Avengers” has taken in one and one-half billion dollars at the box office while “The Dark Knight Rises” got stuck just over a billion. There’s a real question of principle at stake in Pfister’s the remarks to Carrie Seidman, of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, regarding Joss Whedon’s Marvel reboot (as posted here by Jim Emerson, who took a screen shot of the remarks before they were taken down from the newspaper’s Web site):

What’s really important is storytelling. None of it matters if it doesn’t support the story. I thought “The Avengers” was an appalling film. They’d shoot from some odd angle and I’d think, why is the camera there? Oh, I see, because they spent half a million on the set and they have to show it off. It took me completely out of the movie. I was driven bonkers by that illogical form of storytelling.

Pfister’s cinematography is indeed a key aspect of Nolan’s films—not least, of their sententious and unintentionally comical earnestness. Or, to put it differently, his images might seem beautiful to those who also find Nolan’s films substantial. “The Dark Knight Rises” may stage a version of revolution in New York, but its politics are still less significant, its implications less resonant than those of “The Avengers,” yet the droningly dun palette conveys Nolan’s belief that he’s making a grand statement. Rule of thumb: when a filmmaker or critic begins to talk about “reality,” it’s a boast about the righteous intentions of a political statement that go beyond so-called storytelling—and that’s just what Pfister does in this interview, when discussing his background as a documentary cinematographer: “Working with reality helps reduce the amount of artifice in your work and that is the style of film I appreciate.”

It’s worth adding that Pfister admits that he’s “not a big super hero fan. In terms of the movie-going experience for me, I love the realistic stuff because it’s just that much less formulaic.” That may indeed be so—yet Joss Whedon gets far more nuanced emotion from his characters and situations (and, for that matter, more interesting political allegory) in “The Avengers” than Nolan does in “The Dark Knight Rises,” and, as impressive as some of the on-set tricks of “Inception” were, none evoked the joyful awe of Iron Man’s climactic rocketing through the atmosphere near the end of “The Avengers.” Whedon, who surely is a big superhero fan, is therefore able to take it more seriously—he finds more imaginative exhilaration, feeling, and importance in superhero movies than those who work on them with long tongs.

WWE WrestleMania 29 is in the books with John Cena beating The Rock to win the WWE Championship and former UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar falling to Triple H. We'll got full results, analysis and GIFs.

WWE WrestleMania 29 is in the books and what a show it was. In front of the second largest crowd in WWE history at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., fans saw John Cena regain the WWE Championship by pinning The Rock, and also saw Triple H save his career by beating former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

The Undertaker also remained undefeated at WrestleMania, running his record to 21-0 by pinning CM Punk with the Tombstone in the best match on the show.

Let's go over the results and some opinion on the matches:

The Shield d. The Big Show, Randy Orton & Sheamus

Opinion: Simply put, The Shield is awesome. These are three guys to really keep your eye out for, especially Dean Ambrose, who has all the tools to become one of the best in the company in the near future. Some good comedy spots with chops early in this one and it really caught fire at the end.

Mark Henry d. Ryback

Opinion: Well, didn't really see this one coming, and it seemed especially pointless after Ryback laid Henry out after the match. But Henry is awesome and it was nice to see him get a big win on the big stage.

Team Hell No d. Dolph Ziggler and Big E Langston to retain the WWE Tag Team Championship

Opinion: This was rushed, but it was all action, so it was pretty darn good. Daniel Bryan is great, so is Ziggler, and Langston is going to be huge, as well. Was a little surprised to see the champs retain here, but this was one of the most over matches on the show.

Fandango d. Chris Jericho

Opinion: Well, the finish was a little clunky, but Fandango did well in his first big match and Chris Jericho continues to show why he is one of the best in the world. If he does go back to music for a while, here's hoping he comes back sooner than later. He really adds a lot to the company.

Alberto Del Rio d. Jack Swagger to retain the World Heavyweight Championship

Opinion: This one really didn't click for me. Not surprised to see Del Rio come away with the win, though. This was certainly unoffensive and no one messed anything up, but I wasn't feeling it.

The Undertaker d. CM Punk

Opinion: By far and away the best match on the show. Even though I knew Undertaker was going to win (how couldn't he?), they still had me buying into some of the false finishes near the end, especially when Punk laid out Undertaker with the urn. But, of course, Undertaker had it in him to hit the Tombstone and remain undefeated. This was great.

Triple H d. Brock Lesnar

Opinion: Sigh. Lesnar is now 1-2 since returning to WWE. That's right, the biggest monster in the company is 1-2. But Triple H had to get his win back here. There was nothing wrong with this (expect the dead crowd because they were still worn out from the previous match), but it just seemed pointless to me to have Triple H win. Now they have to do something to rebuild Lesnar again. Great.

John Cena d. The Rock to win the WWE Championship

Opinion: This was definitely slow-paced to start, but the two picked it up and Cena winning with the Attitude Adjustment didn't upset me as much as I thought it would when this match was first announced. I guess because I got myself ready for it. I don't know. But Cena is the champ again. Yipee.

Early Years

Professional cricket player. Largely considered cricket's greatest batsman, Sachin Tendulkar was born April 24, 1973 in Bombay, India, to a middle-class family, the youngest of four children. His father was a professor while his mother worked for a life insurance company.

Named after his family's favorite music director, Sachin Dev Burman, Tendulkar wasn't a particularly gifted student, but he'd always shown himself to be a standout athlete. He was 11 years old when he was given his first cricket bat and his talent in the sport was immediately apparent. At the age of 14 he scored 329 out of a world record stand of 664 in a school match. As his accomplishments grew, he became a sort of cult figure among Bombay schoolboys.

After high school Tendulkar enrolled at Kirti College, where his father also taught. The fact that he decided to go to the school where his father worked was of no surprise. Tendulkar's family is very close and years after he'd achieved stardom and cricket fame, he continued to live next door to his parents.

Professional Play

Tendulkar made his debut in international competition at 16 with a match against Pakistan in Karachi. He wasted little time matching the expectations surrounding his arrival on the professional field. At the age of 18 he scored a pair of centuries in Australia, then in 1994 racked up a score of 179 in a match against the West Indies.

Tendulkar was just 23 when he was named captain of his country's team for the 1996 World Cup. While the tournament proved to be a disappointment for his club, Tendulkar did nothing to diminish his own standing as one of the world's dominant players. He finished out the World Cup as the event's top scorer.

In India, Tendulkar's star shined even brighter. In a country reeling from troubled economic times, the young cricketer was seen as a symbol of hope by his countrymen that better times lay ahead. On national newsweekly went so far as to devote an entire issue to the young cricketer, dubbing him "The Last Hero" for his home country. His style of play—aggressive and inventive—resonated with the sport's fans, as did Tendulkar's unassuming off the field living. Even with his increasing wealth, Tendulkar showed humility and refused to flaunt his money.

Tendulkar's dominance of his sport has continued, even as he's moved well into his thirties. He scored his record-breaking 35th century in Test play in December 2005 in a match against Sri Lanka. In June 2007 he set another mark when he became the first player to record 15,000 runs in one-day international play. In January 2010 he again moved into the record books when became the first batsman to score 13,000 runs in Test play.

Just one month later he registered another first, a "double century" in a match against South Africa. That same year he was named the 2010 International Cricket Council Cricketer of the Year.
