Review- Oz The Great And Powerfull(2013)

The Wizard of Oz has been a part of many people's childhood, and to relive that journey, Walt Disney has brought to us, Oz the Great and Powerful!

Oscar Diggs (James Franco) is a small-time magician with a travelling circus, who cares for little more than making money, and earning fame! He is a charmer with women, and when one such tryst with the circus Strongman's wife forces him to flee, he takes off in a hot-air balloon! The balloon meets with a hurricane, and he swirled off to an unknown land, where he is welcomed by Theodora (Mila Kunis), a beautiful witch, who takes him to be the prophesised wizard OZ, who has come to save their land of Oz from a wicked witch! When Oz learns that by defeating the wicked witch, he will be named the King of Oz, and will be handed over unlimited wealth, he thinks that he has hit the jackpot! Evanora (Rachel Weisz) is taking care of the throne of Oz, while the whole country waits for the famed wizard to come and free them of the wicked witch! Evanora is not convinced that Oscar is indeed the prophesised wizard, and asks him to take down the wicked witch Glinda (Michelle Williams), and prove himself! Though reluctant, Oz sets off in search of Glinda, and is joined along the way by a cute China girl, and the flying monkey Finley! Is Oscar indeed destined to save the land of Oz? Who is the evil witch? Will he be able to transform all his ingenuity to make the people believe that he is indeed a wizard, albeit of a different sort? Will Oz be saved? Watch the movie to know it all!

After directing dark movies like Evil Dead and Spiderman 3, Sam Raimi has taken up a fantasy tale, and brought about a stark reality to it! Oz the Great and Powerful, is sort of like a prequel to the super hit yesteryear movie, The Wizard of Oz! This movie starts off in Black & White, and moves to colour, when Oscar lands in OZ! James Franco has showed why he is such a fabulous star! His portrayal as the selfish Oscar, and how he transforms himself to a better man, with selfless values, and emerges a leader of the people, is amazing! Michelle Williams, as Glinda the Good Witch, is perfect for the role! Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz just breeze through their roles! The dialogue writers have to be commended for the humour they have injected into even the darkest of scenes! The CG, especially for the beautiful landscapes, and Finley the flying monkey are amazing! Though the second half of the movie seems to drag a bit, the screenplay is taut enough to keep the viewer rooted to the screen!

Oz the Great and Powerful, is indeed powerful, and a must watch, this season!
